Tour De France

The ultimate and most prestigious road race, the Tour De France was first run in July 1903 and sponsored by a magazine to boost flagging circulation. The famous yellow jersey was introduced in 1919 and is today probably the most recognisable identifier of leader for any competition worldwide. Since then other jerseys have been introduced to denote king of the mountain (red polka-dot), intermediate sprints (green) and best young rider, white.

Today the Tour is run over 23 days with 21 stages stretching over 3500km and whilst predominately run in France the race has includes stages hosted in adjoining countries. The format largely remains the same with mountain stages, time trials and culminating with a finish on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. Each year the race alternates between a clockwise and anti-clockwise direction.

In 2017 the Tour kicks off in Dusseldorf on July 1st with 5 mountain stages and passing through Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
